Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. As Christmas approaches rapidly, in four days, be conscious of how you spend these last days of Advent. I know there is the last minute everything, but one needs some quiet prayer time as well, to prepare spiritually for Christmas. The daily Mass readings are especially beautiful and stirring these days. Before the day begins, while you have that quiet morning coffee, break open the readings for the day, you can do both at the same time; it is not disrespectful. It will give you perspective for the day.
Christmas will be here, families separated because of schooling or work will be united once again. So, we welcome home particularly, our young people from college. For many of them, this is the first time back home. And there is no feeling like crossing the threshold of your front door: “I’m home!”
For many people, Christmas is also the time they walk through the front doors in God’s House. As Catholics, we can always come home, no matter how long we have been away. There is nothing, except ourselves keeping us from God’s family or His House.
Families will come to Mass together, guests and visitors will fill our Church, and I welcome them most cordially. But I want to welcome in a special way, those who have been away from “Home”. For some it may be many years, while others a short time. No matter how long it has been, walk through the front door, sit yourself down and be a part of the family: the family of God, the family of Saint Margaret’s parish.
Like all families, the Church has its sweet ladies and gentlemen, generous family members, and needy ones. We have the old and newborn, we have uncontrolled toddlers, and rebellious teenagers, saints and sinners, even a few eccentrics. We have them all, that is the way in God’s family. That’s because everyone fits in, there are no outsiders in God’s family.
Invite someone to come Home with you on Christmas. To our parishioners who will be traveling: we pray for your safe return to us.
I wish you and all your family the blessings of Christmas and the Newborn King.
